Description

Anelica Sinensis is an aromatic biennial plant native to Asia.   It thrives in well watered mountain ravines, riverbanks,   and coastal areas.   It grows to 6 feet tall, producing dense, course, thin leaves and at the top of the center stock, clusters of greenish-white flowers that bloom from June through August.   The rootstock, where Dong Quai is derived from, has a spicy odor.

Uses/Applications

Dong Quai is a women’s herb.   It has a tranquilizing effect on the central nervous system, nourishing brain cells and the blood.   It also lubricates the intestines and promotes growth of the womb.   It is very effective against every type of problem with the female system.   It also helps to dissolve blood clots, loosen tight muscles, reduce bruising, relieve headaches, and eliminate anemia.   It is an overall tonic for the female reproductive system, reducing PMS, relieving menopausal symptoms, preventing anemia, and reducing high blood pressure.   It is called the “Female Ginseng.”

Combinations

For female problems combine with Chaste Tree Berries, Wild Yam, Dandelion Root, Licorice Root, Nettle, Lady’s Mantle, Red Mannia Root, or Ginger.

Dong Quai is commercially gathered once the plant is at least one year old.   The roots are then peeled and dried in the shade.
