Description
|
Evening Primrose is a biennial plant native to Canada and some areas of the
United States. This hardy plant thrives in dry meadows, mountains and wastelands.
The yellow, lemon
scented flowers are 1 - 3” across, and bloom from June through October, then producing an oblong,
fuzzy fruit.. The flowers open at dusk.

|
Evening Primrose is a soothing remedy for coughs associated with
colds. It is
also used for depression and as an ointment for rashes and other skin
irritations. The entire plant can be eaten, stimulating the action of the
stomach. Evening Primrose stops thrombosis and low blood pressure, opens blood
vessels and relieves pain of angina, slows down and prevents arthritis inflammation, and lowers
cholesterol.

Collection
|
Collect the leaves in the second year of growth, once the flowers have
bloomed. Peel
the bark from the stems and dry thoroughly.

Evening Primrose is easy to grow from seed or root
divisions. Once it has taken it is self propagating. It is tolerant of most
soil types but requires some shade.

History
|
The generic name, Evening Primrose, is derived from oinos, meaning wine, and
thera, meaning hunt, an old Greek name given by Theophrastus to the plant. For centuries its value as a
food has been recognized. The French used it in salads and others simply ate it fresh in the
spring.
