Jerusalem  Cowslip, Jerusalem Sage, Maple Lungwort, Spotted Comfrey, Spotted Lungwort.

Description

Lungwort is a hardy perennial plant native to Europe, Canada, and the northern United States.   It is also widely cultivated.   The creeping rootstock produces several stems which are covered with silver spotted, dark green leaves.   The clusters of funnel shaped rose or blue flowers bloom from March through May.   Lungwort is rather unique in that both flower colors can be found on the plant at the same time.

Uses/Applications

Use Lungwort to treat diarrhea, hemorrhoid, respiratory problems, coughs, and bronchitis.   Externally use it to heal cuts and wounds, and to treat false menopause.

Combinations

For lung conditions combine with Coltsfoot.

Pectoral, Demulcent, Expectorant.

Leaves, Rootstock.

Collection

Collect in the early spring to early fall while the flowers are in bloom.   For medicinal use, the rootstock must be 3 to 6 years old.

Preparation

Infusion

Pour a cup of boiling water onto 2 Tsp. dried herb.   Infuse 10 minutes.   Take three times per day.

 

Decoction

Boil 57 gr. of rootstock in 7 liters   of water.   Pour into your bath.

 

Tincture

Take 1 - 4 ml. three times per day.

Growing Directions

Plant seeds or root cuttings in the spring.   Grow in moist soil in a partially shaded location.
